Details

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Knowledge Team is redesigning how Claude interacts with external data sources — creating new information architectures and training language models to use those architectures effectively.

Responsibilities

Design and implement new information architecture strategies from scratch
Perform finetuning and reinforcement learning to teach language models how to interact with new information architectures
Build hard knowledge-base evaluation sets to identify failure modes when language models work with external data
Design and evaluate advanced agentic search capabilities

Requirements

Very experienced Python programmer who can quickly produce reliable, high-quality code
Good machine learning research experience
Experience developing software that utilizes Large Language Models (e.g., Claude)
Experience with finetuning and reinforcement learning methods
Experience or familiarity with distributed information retrieval systems, such as search engines, knowledge graphs, RAG, indexing, ranking, and query understanding
Experience with distributed data processing and building complex agentic systems that utilize LLMs
Results-oriented, flexible, comfortable working outside strict role boundaries, and enjoys pair programming
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Minimum years of experience: will correlate with internal job level requirements for the position

Strong candidates will also have experience with

Collaborating with product teams to prototype and deliver solutions
Building complex agentic systems that utilize LLMs
Developing scalable distributed information retrieval systems (search engines, knowledge graphs, RAG, indexing, ranking, query understanding, distributed data processing)

Annual Salary

$350,000 - $850,000 USD

Logistics

Location: Remote-Friendly (travel required); offices in San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; New York City, NY
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time
Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they do sponsor visas and will make reasonable efforts to obtain a visa for candidates they hire
