About the team

The Safety Systems team is responsible for safety work to ensure OpenAI's best models can be safely deployed to the real world to benefit society. The Trustworthy AI team works on action-relevant or decision-relevant research to ensure we shape A(G)I with societal impacts in mind. This includes translating nebulous policy problems into technically tractable and measurable research, building methods for public inputs into model values, understanding anthropomorphism impacts, and increasing external assurances and independent checks.

About the role

We are hiring exceptional research scientists/engineers to increase societal readiness for AGI by translating policy problems into technically tractable and measurable work. This role is based in OpenAI's San Francisco HQ. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role / Responsibilities

  • Set research and strategies to study societal impacts of models in action-relevant ways and tie findings back into model design.
  • Build creative methods and run experiments to enable public input into model values.
  • Increase the rigor of external assurances by turning external findings into robust evaluations.
  • Facilitate and grow the team's ability to effectively de-risk flagship model deployments in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of research experience (industry or comparable academic experience).
  • Proficiency in Python or similar languages.
  • Experience with large-scale AI systems and multimodal datasets.
  • Proficiency in AI safety topics such as RLHF, adversarial training, robustness, and LLM evaluations.
  • Experience designing and running experiments and evaluations at scale.
  • Past experience in interdisciplinary research and enthusiasm for socio-technical topics.
  • Alignment with OpenAI's mission and charter and a demonstrated passion for making cutting-edge AI models safer for real-world use.
