Anthropic's Legal Tech engineers build specialized infrastructure and provide guidance for complex technical matters, partnering closely with counsel and teams across the company to help meet legal obligations while innovating with reliable, interpretable, and auditable AI systems.

The Senior+ Software Engineer will build dedicated, highly secure, and reliable cloud environments and data processing and storage capabilities at speed and scale. The role owns work end to end, from raw requirements through large-scale production systems that satisfy legal invariants and provide auditable results. The engineer will also gather, prioritize, and coordinate needs from Privacy, Security, Research, Infrastructure, and Legal teams, acting as a trusted technical advisor to nontechnical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Build and operate dedicated cloud infrastructure, storage, and data pipelines for specialized workloads that cannot run on general-purpose systems.
• Design architectures with security, privacy, reliability, scalability, and auditability built in.
• Partner with internal customer teams to translate requirements into sound approaches and realistic ETAs.
• Deliver against fixed deadlines.
• Support complex and novel legal requests on controlled infrastructure with a verifiable chain of custody.
• Pair with engineering teams across the company to extend existing infrastructure for new workflows and legal requests.
• Work with nontechnical stakeholders to clarify their needs through responsive, easy-to-follow communication.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating highly trusted infrastructure and data systems in production, including ownership of architectural decisions.
• Experience working across large, complex, multi-team environments, including with stacks and code not directly owned by you.
• Ability to take ownership of a cloud account and secure it end to end, including networking, storage, identity, encryption, and least-privilege provisioning, on AWS and/or GCP.
• Ability to translate legal and privacy requirements into sound technical designs and implementations.
• A habit of verifying rather than assuming, including designing checks for invariants and clearly identifying what has not been proved.
• Ability to work independently in a high-change environment and quickly resequence work when new needs emerge.
• Clear communication with nontechnical stakeholders and an understanding of their needs.
• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Software engineering experience focused on infrastructure, data, privacy, and/or security.
• Proficiency with large-scale data tooling, such as distributed processing, lakehouse table formats, and/or query engines.
• Understanding of data processing pipelines, LLM training, and/or provenance and lineage.
• Experience with secure enclaves, confidential computing, clean rooms, or other purpose-built environments for sensitive data.
• Background in eDiscovery, litigation support, or records retention at scale, including chain of custody and verifiable integrity.

Compensation

• Annual salary: $320,000–$485,000 USD.

Logistics

• The role is remote-friendly but travel-required.
• Anthropic expects staff to be in one of its offices at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more office time.
