Details

Anthropic’s Research Productivity organization builds infrastructure and systems that accelerate research across the company. The team is seeking an experienced software engineer to scale research infrastructure as demand and scope grow rapidly. The role involves first-principles thinking, rapid iteration, and solving reliability and scalability challenges as dependent products evolve.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and scale infrastructure and systems supporting rapidly increasing usage and evolving workloads.
  • Independently scope and lead complex, ambiguous, multi-month engineering projects from initial concept through production.
  • Drive cross-organizational alignment on technical direction across multiple stakeholders and teams.
  • Make architectural decisions shaping the foundation of research infrastructure and tooling.
  • Partner directly with researchers to understand their workflows and anticipate changing requirements.
  • Iterate quickly using pragmatic, first-principles solutions and fast feedback loops.
  • Own the reliability and scalability of critical systems as load, usage, and complexity increase.
  • Help establish technical standards and best practices, and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

  • Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure in production.
  • Track record of independently scoping and delivering complex, ambiguous, multi-month technical projects.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and hands-on coding ability.
  • Experience making architectural decisions that other engineers and teams build upon.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience driving alignment across teams or stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-changing environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Strong candidates may also have experience with:

  • Infrastructure or platforms for research or machine learning workflows.
  • Reliability and architectural challenges associated with rapidly scaling systems.
  • Distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Compute, tooling, and workflow needs of large-scale machine learning research.
  • Startup or startup-like environments with high autonomy.
  • Technical leadership or mentoring of other engineers.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: $405,000–$625,000 USD.

Work Policy and Sponsorship

  • Staff are expected to work from one of Anthropic’s offices at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more office time.
  • Anthropic sponsors visas, although sponsorship is not available for every role and candidate. The company retains an immigration lawyer to assist with visa processes.

Benefits

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space for collaboration.
