Staff iOS Engineer, Media Foundation

Reddit's Media Foundation team is responsible for delivering seamless, high-performance media experiences across all platforms. This role focuses on building scalable media capabilities, delivering high-quality video experiences, and helping other teams integrate with Reddit's video API. The position involves driving technical and product strategy, operations, architecture, and execution for Reddit's media experience.

Responsibilities

• Architect a highly modular, easy-to-integrate iOS video player that enables other teams to build features efficiently while delivering excellent performance.
• Partner with backend media infrastructure and CDN teams to optimize global media delivery and performance.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to execute product and business strategy and develop new media products and features.
• Define engineering standards, recommend best practices, and improve developer workflows.
• Coach and mentor engineers to support their professional development.
• Use AI-assisted development tools for prototyping, system design, and coding while validating and owning the final results.
• Drive technical and product strategy, operations, architecture, and execution for Reddit's media experience.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of experience as a software engineer developing user-facing native iOS applications at scale using Swift.
• In-depth knowledge of AVFoundation, including video and audio playback, asset management, streaming, editing, and exporting.
• Strong understanding of Core Media for timing and synchronization and Core Video for buffer handling, custom playback, and real-time video manipulation.
• Familiarity with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), MPEG-DASH, MP4, other streaming protocols, streaming frameworks, and CDN integration for optimized video delivery.
• Familiarity with reactive frameworks such as RxSwift and Combine.
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and deliver projects on schedule.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Self-directed, innovative, action-oriented approach and comfort working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences in a fully remote environment.

Compensation

The base salary range is $217,000–$303,000 USD per year. The role is also eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and may be eligible for a commission depending on the position offered.
