Details
Anthropic is hiring a Technical Program Manager to bridge the researchers advancing Claude’s scientific capabilities and the external scientific community. Embedded with the Discovery team, this role will conceptualize and run programs that put Claude into scientists’ hands and shape the Anthropic Science Blog, working with Communications, Editorial, Beneficial Deployments, and external partners such as universities, funders, and scientific societies.
This is a technical role rather than a purely operational one. The successful candidate will bring research experience, research judgment, and a firsthand understanding of academia. After aligning with Discovery leads on strategy, they will drive decisions about funding, publishing, and engagement with academic communities.
Responsibilities
- Act as the interface between research and the outside world by staying close to researchers working on Claude’s scientific capabilities and translating rapid capability gains into use by external researchers.
- Help set Anthropic’s external science strategy, including recommending scientific areas and communities of focus and determining how programs, collaborations, and communications fit together.
- Guide the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog by working with researchers and the Editorial team to identify and source internal and external stories, draft and edit posts, and maintain a steady cadence of high-quality science writing.
- Drive external science programs, including grants and access programs such as AI for Science grants and Team plan offerings for research groups, as well as partnerships with scientific foundations and grantmaking organizations.
- Work with Beneficial Deployments on programs focused on high-impact scientific areas.
- Gather feedback from scientific communities, identify usage patterns, understand how researchers use Claude and what capability gaps exist, and turn findings into concrete recommendations for research and product teams.
Requirements
- PhD in a scientific or mathematical field, with a track record of original research.
- Demonstrated writing ability for scientific and general-interest audiences, with enough understanding of how modern AI models are trained to write about them accurately.
- Experience with the grants process, such as applying for and managing competitive funding; experience designing, reviewing, or administering funding programs is preferred.
- Deep engagement with frontier AI, including using AI tools in professional work, understanding their strengths and limitations, and taking seriously the potential for AI to transform the scientific process.
- Track record of driving multi-stakeholder projects to completion and coordinating people managing other high-priority work.
- Resourcefulness, high agency, and the ability to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities.
- Credibility with researchers and an understanding of academic communities, including their incentives, norms, and sensitivities.
- Ability to learn quickly, build contextual understanding in unfamiliar scientific domains, and contribute meaningfully to discussions with researchers outside one’s own field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a program officer, program director, or fellowship lead at a science funder, research agency, or philanthropy.
- Published science writing in outlets such as Quanta, Scientific American, or Physics Today, or a substantial public writing presence such as a blog or newsletter.
- Research experience using AI or machine learning methods, or involving the development of scientific software, tools, or datasets.
- Experience building partnerships with scientific societies, journals, or research institutions.
- Familiarity with AI safety and responsible deployment, including dual-use considerations in fields such as biology.
- Experience organizing conferences, workshops, or large coordinated launches.
Compensation
Annual salary: $365,000–$435,000 USD.
Logistics
