  • Work on research questions related to AI safety, alignment, AI security, frontier red-teaming, machine learning systems, and reinforcement learning.
  • Implement ideas quickly and communicate research clearly.
  • Participate in the research community through technical discussions and collaboration.

Potential research areas include:

  • Scalable oversight.
  • Adversarial robustness and AI control.
  • Model organisms of misalignment.
  • Model internals and interpretability.
  • Safeguards research, including adversarial defenses and model safety evaluations.
  • AI welfare.
  • Stress-testing frontier models in areas such as cybersecurity, robotics, and cryptography.
  • ML systems and reinforcement learning, including model architectures, optimizers, training data, accelerator simulators, hardware backends, and reinforcement learning environment pipelines.

Requirements

  • Motivation to make AI safe and beneficial for society.
  • Excitement about transitioning to full-time empirical AI research.
  • Experience leading ambitious work in a technical field.
  • Suitable backgrounds may include professor in a quantitative discipline, technical founder, or staff-level engineer.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments.
  • Ability to implement ideas quickly and communicate clearly.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Machine learning experience is not required. Strong candidates may have authored research papers in machine learning, natural language processing, or AI safety, or have experience with large language models, reinforcement learning, Kubernetes clusters, and complex shared codebases.

Program Details

  • Residents receive a concrete, scoped project matched to their background, mentorship from Anthropic researchers, access to Claude models and GPU compute, and connections to the broader AI safety and security research community.
  • The interview process includes an application, recruiter screen, technical assessment, research discussion, and reference check.
  • Applications for this round close on November 22, 2026, at 11:59 PM PT. Offers are expected to be made in January 2027.
  • The role is full-time for the duration of the residency.
