Details
Perplexity is looking for a Content Designer to shape the words across its products, including web, mobile, desktop, and voice experiences. The role focuses on clarity, usefulness, product language, AI-generated content, and maintaining a consistent Perplexity voice across products.
The Content Designer will join the Design Systems team and collaborate with product designers, engineers, product managers, research, brand, marketing, and internationalization partners. The role requires strong UX fundamentals, product judgment, writing skills, and fluency with AI-powered tools, including an understanding of model behavior, prompts, system instructions, and quality evaluation for non-deterministic output.
Responsibilities
- Design and write in-product language across web, mobile, desktop, and voice, including UI copy, flows, onboarding, notifications, empty states, errors, and in-product education.
- Partner with product designers from the beginning of projects to shape flows, structure, information architecture, and language.
- Name features and products, and own terminology, navigation labels, and taxonomies.
- Make complex AI and agent behavior understandable, including what the product is doing, why it is doing it, what it cannot do, and when it needs user input.
- Write and refine prompts and system instructions, and help define voice and response styles for AI models in the product.
- Define content quality standards and help build evaluation criteria, datasets, and reviewer guidance for AI-generated content.
- Build and maintain voice and tone guidelines, content patterns, and content guidance in the design system.
- Use research, data, and experiments to test language and improve comprehension, activation, and task completion.
- Partner with brand and marketing to align product language with the company’s external voice.
- Work with internationalization partners to ensure the product reads well in every supported language.
- Review copy in code and ship small language changes directly when appropriate.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in content design, UX writing, or product design, shipping software at scale.
- An excellent portfolio showing how language shaped product decisions, including before-and-after examples and the candidate’s role.
- Strong UX fundamentals, including interaction design, information architecture, usability, and accessibility.
- Good product judgment regarding what to build, what to remove, and what matters most to users.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, ranging from precise interface copy to clear explanations and confident naming.
- Strong AI fluency, including hands-on experience writing prompts, working with large language models, and evaluating AI-generated content.
- Systems-thinking experience building content frameworks, style guides, or terminology that scale across teams.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to explain content decisions and tradeoffs to designers, engineers, and leaders.
- A strong focus on shipping high-quality software.
Nice to Have
- Experience designing content for AI products, assistants, agents, or conversational interfaces.
- Experience with prompt engineering, model evaluations, or research teams focused on model behavior.
- Experience across consumer and enterprise products, including administration, permissions, privacy, and billing flows.
- Comfort working in code, such as editing strings, reviewing pull requests, or prototyping with AI tools.
- Experience with localization and writing for global audiences.
Candidate Notes
Candidates should provide portfolio work where their words changed the product, showing the problem, explored options, shipped language, and resulting impact. Examples of AI-related work, such as prompts, evaluations, or content designed for model output, are encouraged.
