Details

This remote role can be located anywhere ClickHouse has a hiring presence. ClickHouse is an open-source database for real-time applications and analytics, and its Core Engineering teams own the heart of the ClickHouse Open Source project. The Performance Engineering team is seeking C++ engineers focused on optimizing distributed systems and scaling ClickHouse Open Source and ClickHouse Cloud.

Responsibilities

Analyze and optimize the performance of the core ClickHouse database.
Work on query optimization, distributed query optimization, relational operators such as aggregation and joins, caching, and low-level optimizations such as SIMD instructions.
Extend existing performance tests and add new tests using real-world or synthetic datasets to ensure database performance does not deteriorate over time.
Support the Support Engineering team by debugging advanced customer performance issues.
Collaborate with other core teams to assess the performance impact of new features and provide performance tests and guidance.
Work with the open-source community by resolving issues, reviewing and finishing pull requests, and answering questions through mailing lists, chats, Google Groups, and external Slack channels.

Requirements

Solid professional software development experience in C++, including experience with Unix systems.
Strong knowledge of database internals and design.
Experience in performance engineering, ideally with databases. Experience in high-frequency trading, simulation, real-time data processing, or similar areas is also relevant.
Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering teams.
Willingness to work closely with the open-source community and participate in detailed, respectful code reviews.
Strong problem-solving and production debugging skills.
Passion for efficiency, availability, scalability, and data governance.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
High level of responsibility, ownership, and accountability.

Bonus Qualifications

Experience with ClickHouse.
Experience in security, privacy, and compliance.
Experience with TCP/IP and network programming.
Experience developing cloud infrastructure services, preferably with Kubernetes.
Experience giving public talks at technical conferences and meetups.
Previous contributions to open-source projects.
