Details

ClickHouse is an open-source database for real-time applications and analytics. The Core Engineering teams own the ClickHouse Open Source project and work on scaling and optimizing highly distributed systems. This is a remote-first role that can be performed anywhere in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to, analyze, and optimize the performance of the core ClickHouse database.
  • Work on query optimization, distributed query optimization, relational operators such as aggregation and joins, caching, and low-level optimizations including SIMD instructions.
  • Extend existing performance tests and add new tests based on real-world or synthetic datasets to prevent database performance regression.
  • Support the Support Engineering team by debugging advanced customer performance issues.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and external community support channels.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to assess the performance and reliability impact of new features.
  • Work with the open-source community by resolving issues, reviewing and finishing pull requests, and answering questions in email, chats, Google Groups, and external Slack channels.

Requirements

  • Solid professional software development experience in C++.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux systems.
  • Strong knowledge of database internals and design.
  • Experience in performance engineering, ideally in a database or in areas such as high-frequency trading, simulation, or real-time data processing.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness to work closely with the open-source community and participate in detailed, respectful code reviews.
  • Strong problem-solving and production-debugging skills.
  • Passion for efficiency, availability, scalability, and data governance.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • High responsibility, ownership, and accountability.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with ClickHouse.
  • Experience in security, privacy, and compliance.
  • Experience with TCP/IP and network programming.
  • Experience developing cloud infrastructure services, preferably with Kubernetes.
  • Experience giving public talks at technical conferences and meetups.
  • Contributions to open-source projects.
