About the Team
The Core Services organization builds and runs mission-critical online services that product teams rely on in production. The team owns foundational distributed systems and platform capabilities that enable reliable execution, high-performance services, and large-scale file and data needs across products. Its focus is production service foundations and core runtime services, distinct from developer infrastructure and data infrastructure.
About the Role
OpenAI is hiring an Engineering Manager, Core Services to lead teams responsible for highly reliable, high-scale distributed systems that sit on the critical path for OpenAI products. The team owns foundational production systems used by product engineering teams. The role involves collaborating with product and infrastructure partners to ship reliable services quickly, scaling systems and teams as OpenAI grows, partnering with senior engineering leaders to scale the organization, maturing operations, and driving major platform initiatives. Strong technical ability is required.
Responsibilities
- Manage and grow a high-performing team of infrastructure engineers.
- Lead teams building and operating large, critical production platforms, including cluster reliability, scaling, and rollout safety.
- Build and operate mission-critical distributed systems with strong operational rigor, including SLOs, incident response, capacity planning, and reliability.
- Set technical direction for platform foundations such as workflow and orchestration capabilities, large-scale file, blob, and storage services, and core service foundations.
- Partner with product engineering, adjacent infrastructure teams, and, where relevant, finance and cost partners.
- Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and emerging leaders.
Requirements
- Significant experience leading teams that run mission-critical infrastructure in production.
- Experience operating mission-critical services or core distributed-systems building blocks.
- Experience building platform-like systems, such as orchestration and workflow-execution systems or service platforms, and/or large-scale storage, blob, or file infrastructure.
- Experience building systems spanning multiple cloud environments.
- A focus on building scalable, reliable systems and improving operational health.
- Ability to own problems end-to-end and move quickly in environments with ambiguity and competing priorities.
