Details

Anthropic is seeking a Financial Data and Controls Lead to join its Billing Platform team. The team builds systems for subscriptions, usage billing, quote to cash, invoicing, and payments. This role owns billing accuracy, reconciliation, and financial controls across these systems, ensuring that appropriate checks and controls are in place and that audit evidence exists.

The role sits in Engineering and works closely with Finance Systems, Accounting, Internal Audit, and Data Engineering. The successful candidate will combine engineering or data-practitioner experience with strong accounting domain knowledge and the ability to communicate with engineers, Finance teams, and auditors.

Responsibilities

  • Own reconciliation and accuracy checks for critical billing data, including quantities, prices, discounts, and invoices, across product platforms, third-party billing and payment providers, app stores, cloud marketplaces, and in-house systems.
  • Design and run detective controls that identify billing errors before they reach the accounting books.
  • Partner with billing engineering teams to turn recurring checks into automated verifiers.
  • Review financially significant billing changes and identify those affecting SOX or IT application controls (ITACs).
  • Ensure functional test evidence is available and make SOX review a standard part of the billing release process.
  • Own the end-to-end test strategy and audit evidence for billing changes.
  • Triage billing errors, prioritize backfills and fixes, and track materiality over time.
  • Define and maintain data contracts between billing and finance systems.
  • Lead a working group of reconciliation and controls owners across billing engineering teams through influence rather than direct reporting authority.
  • Translate product and pricing roadmaps into financial impact assessments, test strategies, and process updates.

Requirements

  • Experience building or owning a financial ledger, billing reconciliation, or cash reconciliation system end to end that Accounting relied on to close the books.
  • Strong hands-on SQL skills, including matching messy datasets such as usage events and invoices, identifying discrepancies, and explaining root causes.
  • Accounting knowledge covering order to cash, month-end close, and materiality.
  • Experience working with SOX and Internal Audit teams on IT application controls, detective controls, transaction monitoring, functional test evidence, and auditor walkthroughs.
  • Experience defining data contracts between billing or product systems and finance systems such as ERP, general ledger, or revenue-recognition systems.
  • Experience driving work across Engineering, Finance, Accounting, and Audit without direct authority.
  • Ability to explain technical issues to Finance teams and auditors and financial risk to engineers.
  • Interest in AI and commitment to Anthropic's mission.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background as a backend, data, or analytics engineer who built a financial ledger or cash reconciliation system from scratch.
  • Experience operating these systems under public-company reporting requirements.
  • Experience with usage-based or consumption billing and multi-party billing, including marketplaces or app stores.
  • Experience converting manual checks into automated verifiers.
  • Experience remediating control deficiencies or establishing a controls program while systems were changing.
  • Experience using Claude or other AI tools to automate reconciliation, testing, or evidence collection.
  • Experience with Stripe, Metronome, Zuora, NetSuite, or Workday Financials.
  • Python experience for data analysis or automation.

Compensation and Logistics

  • Annual salary: $345,000–$425,000 USD.
  • Hybrid policy: Staff are expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
  • Anthropic states that it sponsors visas and will make reasonable efforts to obtain a visa for successful candidates, with immigration-lawyer support.
  • Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration spaces.
