Details

Analytics Instrumentation is part of the Data Engineering and Monetization group, focused on collecting Product Usage and Billing event data within GitLab. The team builds privacy-conscious data collection platforms that enable product teams to assess user behavior and make evidence-based decisions across GitLab SaaS and Self-Managed deployment environments.

The role involves guiding the design and development of a unified data infrastructure platform that consolidates analytics instrumentation across GitLab's engineering organization. The platform replaces multiple language-specific software development kits with a single unified solution.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the design, implementation, and evolution of a unified data collection platform using Golang, Kubernetes, ClickHouse, and NATS, with a focus on reliability, performance, and adoption across GitLab teams.
  • Improve the emission, transit, and quality of instrumentation data, including data quality, data integrity, and usage billing accuracy.
  • Provide technical guidance for usage billing and instrumentation systems during working hours, including incident handling, root cause analysis, and service restoration.
  • Collaborate with research and development teams and the enterprise data organization to deliver common solutions across organizational boundaries.
  • Make technical choices balancing ease of use for product teams with reliability and correctness for data consumers.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and clear technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Significant experience working with platform or infrastructure systems in production environments.
  • Strong proficiency in Go and experience building and maintaining production services.
  • Strong backend development experience, with the ability to design and deliver scalable, reliable systems for internal and external customers.
  • Experience guiding technical design and making tradeoffs involving system reliability, performance at scale, data quality, and observability.
  • Experience working across team boundaries with product teams, data consumers, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies and open-source development practices.
  • A track record of mentoring engineers and helping teams make clear, well-documented technical choices.

Team

The Analytics Instrumentation team is a distributed team of generalist engineers working across the GitLab codebase, JavaScript, Go, Python satellite services, data pipelines, and AI tool integration. The team works on event data collection, privacy compliance tools, and AI-powered analytics frameworks while building inclusive solutions that respect user privacy.

Benefits

  • Benefits supporting health, finances, and well-being
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Team member resource groups
  • Equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan
  • Growth and development fund
  • Parental leave

Compensation

The United States base salary range is $117,600–$252,000 USD. The range applies to US residents and does not include bonuses, equity, or benefits. Grade level and salary are determined based on factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, equity with other team members, market data, and geographic location.
