Details
The Infranomics team builds the software and data foundations that help OpenAI understand, plan, and improve the economics of its infrastructure. The team works across engineering and finance to make infrastructure spend visible, allocate capacity effectively, and improve efficiency as products grow.
The systems support CPU, network, storage, and GPU infrastructure behind products such as ChatGPT, the API, and Codex. The role focuses on connecting resource usage, cost, forecasting, and planning to improve infrastructure investment decisions.
Responsibilities
- Define the technical direction and roadmap for infrastructure cost and efficiency systems.
- Lead projects from problem definition through implementation, adoption, and ongoing operation.
- Build billing, usage metering, and cost attribution systems connecting infrastructure spend to resources, workloads, services, and owning teams.
- Develop batch or streaming data pipelines and shared data models combining cloud billing, resource inventory, and utilization signals.
- Build tools for budgeting, forecasting, and capacity planning.
- Identify underutilized resources and sources of waste, and partner with engineering teams to deliver and measure improvements.
- Create APIs, reporting tools, and automated controls for consumption visibility, budget management, and infrastructure tradeoffs.
- Provide technical leadership across teams, mentor engineers, and own system correctness, scalability, and production behavior.
Requirements
- More than 7 years of experience designing, building, and operating production software and distributed systems.
- Experience with technical ownership across multiple teams or a significant infrastructure domain.
- Experience building systems for infrastructure efficiency, cloud cost attribution, usage metering, budgeting, forecasting, or capacity management.
- Hands-on engineering experience across architecture, implementation, debugging, and operational improvements.
- Understanding of how compute, storage, and networking consumption translate into cost, including tradeoffs among utilization, performance, reliability, and growth.
- Strong focus on data correctness and experience building trustworthy systems from complex billing and operational data.
- Ability to work across engineering, finance, product, and leadership and translate broad goals into actionable plans.
- Experience building internal platforms that provide visibility into cloud spend, resource utilization, and ownership.
- Experience developing batch or streaming data pipelines, financial data platforms, or large-scale analytics systems.
- Experience with Kubernetes, public cloud infrastructure, or resource management systems across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Experience automating resource allocation, cost allocation policies, budget tracking, or capacity forecasting.
This role is based in San Francisco, California, and is on-site.
Benefits

- 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
- Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
- Paid time off, company holidays, and office closures.
- Mental health and wellness support.
- Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
