About the Team
The Developer Productivity group is responsible for making Stripe’s developers happy and productive. The team works on tools, processes, and code refactoring to accelerate Stripe engineering as the company scales.
The role focuses on building tools that improve the day-to-day experience of Stripe engineers. The ideal candidate is passionate about solving developer experience problems and pragmatically shipping results iteratively, with technical expertise in areas such as language processing tools, version control systems, build systems, and distributed systems engineering. The work includes engineer-facing systems, CI infrastructure platforms, and big-data engineering.
Responsibilities
- Build and manage systems that handle CI at massive scale, including batching, speculative stacking, and merge-race inhibition.
- Build and manage systems for Stripe’s extensive CI test suite, including identifying and managing flaky tests, assessing and reproducing flakiness, and optimizing test effectiveness.
- Enhance CI system reliability through adaptive responses to available capacity, resilience and self-recovery from outages, and highly leveraged observability.
- Detect and isolate code breakages to minimize their blast radius.
- Work directly with product engineers to understand and deliver their productivity needs.
- Scope and lead large technical projects with significant impact for Stripe engineers.
- Design, build, and maintain core CI systems used by Stripe’s engineering teams.
- Evaluate technology and architecture choices and own technical decisions where appropriate.
- Contribute directly to interface design and code, serving as a role model for high-quality software development.
- Arbitrate critical decisions while considering software best practices, Stripe system realities, and stakeholder concerns.
- Teach and mentor the next generation of technical leaders at Stripe.
- Drive the effective use of AI-assisted implementation, operations, and delivery within the team.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- 10+ years of professional hands-on software development experience.
- Hands-on experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
- A track record of technically mentoring junior and senior engineers.

- Customer obsession and the ability to articulate and represent customer experience in various forums to drive the right outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to define and drive complex initiatives and projects across multiple teams.
- Proven success with cross-discipline and cross-team collaboration, along with strong conviction and courage.

- Related experience in developer tooling, CI/CD, or DevOps.
