Financial Engineering builds the financial systems behind ChatGPT, Codex, and OpenAI's API platform. The team develops systems for purchasing, payments, subscriptions, billing, product catalogs, SKUs, bundles, workspaces, entitlements, and usage metering.

The role involves building services and data pipelines that handle large volumes of usage and transactions, maintain consistency across payments, product access, and financial records, and support evolving products and pricing. Experience with payments, billing, or financial systems is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

• Design and build systems for purchasing, payments, subscriptions, and billing across OpenAI products and global markets.
• Build product catalogs, SKUs, and bundles that enable product teams to launch and evolve offerings.
• Develop workspace and entitlement systems that connect purchases and subscriptions to product access for individuals and teams.
• Ensure charges and product access remain correct when requests are retried, updates arrive late, or another service fails.
• Build metering systems, data pipelines, and APIs that convert high-volume usage into accurate bills, timely spending information, and traceable records.
• Create reusable building blocks for launching new offerings, pricing, and payment options.
• Simplify complex financial workflows for customers and internal teams using customer feedback and experiments.
• Scale and evolve live systems while protecting customer access, financial accuracy, performance, and security.
• Own problems from early design through launch and operation, collaborating with product, design, finance, and engineering teams on important technical decisions.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience at the Staff+ level.
• Experience with payments, subscriptions, pricing, billing, or systems that manage customer purchases and revenue is beneficial.
• Experience with product catalogs, packaging and bundles, workspace management, entitlements, or usage metering is beneficial.
• Experience building financial or transaction systems at scale, reconciling records across systems, or supporting compliance and audits is beneficial.
