Details

Anthropic is seeking a Staff / Senior Data Center Security Engineer to secure the data center footprint where Claude is trained and served, including sites, hardware in transit, personnel, and vendors. The role will design security controls, build systems that enforce and verify them, and establish technical standards for Anthropic and its partners. The position involves regular travel to critical-infrastructure data center sites and may include on-call responsibilities for security events.

Responsibilities

  • Own one or more security domains end to end, including physical security, hardware supply chain and chain of custody, media protection and sanitization, personnel security and site access, third-party and vendor security assessments, and maintenance and contingency controls.
  • Build internal tools, automation, and AI agents for evidence collection, access reviews, asset and custody tracking, and partner intake.
  • Conduct security reviews for new sites, leases, and vendors; identify gaps in designs, contracts, and operating procedures; write security terms and exhibits; and verify remediation.
  • Write requirements and procedures as code in version-controlled repositories so partners can implement them and assessors can test them.
  • Assess sites and suppliers against security requirements using on-site reviews and evidence, document deviations, and engineer compensating controls where necessary.
  • Maintain continuous compliance evidence and connect controls to applicable compliance frameworks.
  • Respond to physical security events, including intrusion alarms, custody breaks, and access violations, and implement corrective controls.

Requirements

  • Experience engineering a security control domain end to end, including designing controls, building or integrating enforcement systems, and verifying their effectiveness.
  • Ability to read and review code, design data systems for security tooling, and build automation using Git, code review, and AI coding agents.
  • Hands-on security experience with data centers, critical infrastructure, or a large hardware fleet in at least one relevant security domain.
  • Experience applying a control framework such as NIST SP 800-53, ISO 27001, or SOC 2 to real systems and producing audit evidence.
  • Ability to write requirements that third parties can implement and assessors can test, including verification methods and required evidence.
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience across multiple security domains.
  • Experience working with cloud, colocation, or GPU cloud operators and sites not fully controlled by the company.
  • Experience with federal assessment regimes based on NIST SP 800-53, including NIST SP 800-161 supply-chain guidance and NIST SP 800-88 media-sanitization guidance.
  • Experience building governance, risk, and compliance systems or evidence automation, including automated control checks, asset or custody tracking, assessment pipelines, and docs-as-code workflows.
  • Experience running incident response at physical sites, including alarms, investigations, and after-action remediation.
  • Experience working in live data halls and active construction sites while following a method of procedure.
  • Experience redlining contract security language with legal and procurement teams.
  • Experience with international sites, including country-specific personnel screening and staffing restrictions, data residency, and hardware export controls.
  • Experience building AI agents or automation to replace recurring manual security work.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: $320,000–$405,000 USD

Work Arrangement and Logistics

  • Remote-friendly, with regular travel required.
  • Anthropic currently expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time; some roles may require more office time.
  • Visa sponsorship is available, although sponsorship cannot be guaranteed for every role or candidate.
  • Benefits include competitive compensation, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration space.
