Details
GitLab is seeking a Cloud Platform Engineer to join the Runway team and help design, build, and maintain the infrastructure and developer tooling that powers its engineering organization. The role focuses on advancing a Kubernetes-based platform, maturing GitOps practices, and driving infrastructure-as-code adoption. It is a hands-on technical position at the intersection of infrastructure, automation, and developer experience.
Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and improve production-grade Kubernetes clusters across cloud environments, including cluster upgrades, scaling, and reliability management.
- Own and extend ArgoCD-based GitOps workflows, including Application Sets, synchronization policies, and deployment standards.
- Write, review, and maintain Terraform modules for provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure.
- Apply infrastructure-as-code best practices, including module reuse, state management, and drift detection.
- Monitor platform health, respond to incidents, conduct post-mortems, and improve availability, performance, and observability.
- Collaborate with application teams to onboard services onto the platform.
- Create documentation, runbooks, and self-service tooling to improve developer productivity.
- Implement RBAC, network policies, and secrets management using tools such as Vault, Sealed Secrets, and External Secrets Operator.
- Ensure infrastructure meets security and compliance requirements.
- Integrate platform capabilities with CI pipelines such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Tekton.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience in a platform, infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE role.
- Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes; experience with EKS, GKE, or AKS is preferred.
- Experience with ArgoCD or comparable GitOps tooling such as Flux.
- Proficiency with Terraform for cloud infrastructure provisioning, including remote state, workspaces, and module design.
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Ability to write scripts and automation in Python, Bash, or Go.
- Familiarity with Helm for Kubernetes package management.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS, load balancing, ingress, and service mesh concepts.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document systems clearly and collaborate across teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio, Linkerd, or Cilium.
- Familiarity with policy-as-code tools such as OPA/Gatekeeper or Kyverno.
- Exposure to observability stacks including Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and Loki.
- Knowledge of Crossplane or other Kubernetes-native infrastructure-as-code approaches.
- Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tooling.
- Experience with multi-cluster or multi-region Kubernetes architectures.
- Relevant certifications such as CKA, CKAD, AWS Solutions Architect, or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.
Salary
The United States base salary range is $126,000–$213,000 USD. The range does not include bonuses, equity, or benefits. Grade level and salary are determined based on factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, market data, and geographic location.
