Details
Airbnb's Security Engineering organization protects a global community of Hosts and guests. The Cloud & Data Security team secures Airbnb's cloud environments, data infrastructure, identity and access systems, and the paved roads used by engineering teams.
As Engineering Manager, Cloud & Data Security, you will lead a team of security engineers responsible for securing cloud infrastructure, data platforms, and controls governing how sensitive data is accessed and moved. You will set technical direction, coach engineers through complex architectural work, partner across the company, and own the team's roadmap, people, and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a team of security engineers focused on cloud infrastructure security, data security, and identity and access controls.
- Set and drive the team's roadmap in alignment with organizational security priorities, balancing embedded partnership with automation and paved-road investment.
- Partner with Infrastructure, Data Platform, and Application Security teams to embed security into how Airbnb builds, deploys, and operates its systems.
- Guide the team through architectural decisions across AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, data infrastructure, and identity systems.
- Coach engineers through career growth, technical development, performance management, and difficult situations.
- Communicate technical direction, risk posture, and progress to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Raise the bar on technical craft, operational excellence, and ways of working.
Requirements
- 9+ years of engineering experience, including at least 5+ years in security engineering or a related infrastructure discipline.
- 3+ years of people management experience leading a team of security engineers.
- Proven experience leading security engineering teams working on cloud infrastructure, data security, or platform security at scale.
- Deep understanding of modern cloud security practices across AWS or comparable cloud platforms, including IAM, network security, secrets management, and workload identity.
- Strong technical judgment across infrastructure security domains, including Kubernetes, container security, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud-native detection and prevention controls.
- Familiarity with securing data platforms and pipelines, including access controls, encryption, and data governance patterns.
- Experience coaching and growing security engineers through performance management, career development, and difficult feedback.
- Ability to work alongside infrastructure and platform teams as an embedded security partner.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical decisions for executive audiences and cross-functional partners.
- Enterprise security experience involving identity, endpoint, or corporate infrastructure is a plus but not required.
Location
This position is US remote eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. Candidates must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.
Compensation
The base pay range is $212,000–$265,000 USD. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
