Details
NVIDIA is looking for a Lead System Software Engineer to develop microcontroller firmware and server manageability software for GPU server platforms. The role focuses on ARM M-class microcontrollers, embedded RTOS environments, BMC solutions, and DMTF-standard management protocols.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement microcontroller firmware for GPU server platforms, including ARM M-class microcontrollers.
- Develop C and C++ server manageability features in RTOS-based, embedded-optimized environments using Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
- Perform microcontroller firmware bring-up, debugging, performance analysis, and coding of manageability features for NVIDIA server platforms.
- Develop embedded management software for reporting and connectivity between server management devices.
- Implement register-based communication and DMTF standard messaging protocols for interaction between BMCs, GPUs, switches, memory, I/O expanders, sensors, and local microcontroller peripherals.
- Design a portable microcontroller framework for use across server management subsystems.
- Develop and review code, write and review design documents, and collaborate with team members to meet product requirements.
- Instrument code for maximum coverage, automate unit tests, maintain detailed test case reports, and provide software quality reports based on static analysis, code coverage, and microcontroller load.
- Collaborate with security and hardware teams to align code with security goals and influence hardware design and architecture reviews.
- Develop performance-optimized active-monitoring BMC solutions using DMTF standards including MCTP, Redfish, SPDM, and PLDM.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- At least 12 years of experience in low-level microcontroller firmware development using Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
- Demonstrated experience developing BMC and/or microcontroller firmware for managing CPU, GPU, network, and storage devices.
- Experience with embedded interfaces including USB and I3C.
- Experience with ARM integrated development environments, debuggers, logic and protocol analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
- Deep understanding of interrupt schemes, multithreading, DMA, memory management, and resource-constrained embedded environments.
- Strong embedded programming and scripting skills using C, C++, Bash, Python, Go, or similar languages.
- Experience reviewing and using hardware schematics, reference manuals, and datasheets for embedded development.
- Expertise with server manageability protocols such as MCTP, PLDM, SPDM, SMBus, and OCP recovery.
- Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals, distributions, packages, upgrade mechanisms, and image building and deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with microcontroller embedded firmware development and out-of-band management.
- Hands-on experience implementing an MCTP stack in embedded environments or FPGA.
- Contributions to industry groups or open-source projects such as Open Compute, OpenBMC, or DMTF.
- Expertise in system software and platform security for x86- and ARM-based rack or blade server systems.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary range for Level 5: USD 224,000–356,500 per year.
- Base salary range for Level 6: USD 272,000–431,250 per year.
- Eligibility for equity and benefits.
- Applications will be accepted at least until August 1, 2026.
- NVIDIA is an equal opportunity employer committed to an inclusive work environment.
