Details

Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction at the intersection of engineering and research on the Claude Code team. The role focuses on measuring, understanding, and improving Claude's coding capabilities through evaluation systems, research infrastructure, and internal tooling. This is a senior individual contributor position involving architecture, technical leadership, mentoring, and ownership of critical systems from design through production reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for evaluation systems, research infrastructure, and internal tooling across the Claude Code team.
  • Architect evaluation frameworks that measure model capabilities across diverse coding tasks and scale with the research roadmap.
  • Lead the design of infrastructure that enables researchers to run experiments at scale.
  • Make foundational architectural tradeoffs that shape how the team operates.
  • Identify high-leverage engineering investments and drive them to completion.
  • Serve as a senior technical bridge between product and research, influencing capability priorities and progress measurements.
  • Mentor engineers, review designs, unblock peers, and help establish scalable engineering standards.
  • Partner with research leads to translate ambiguous research questions into durable engineering solutions.
  • Own critical systems end-to-end, including architecture, production reliability, and long-term maintenance.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of operating as a Staff or Principal Engineer or equivalent.
  • Experience architecting and owning complex, high-stakes systems, including pipelines, infrastructure, or platforms that orchestrate many components and serve multiple teams.
  • A history of setting technical direction through design documents, architectural decisions, or technical strategy.
  • Ability to work in high-intensity environments with fast iteration cycles while balancing speed and durability.
  • Ability to take ownership of ambiguous, open-ended problems and drive them to completion with minimal direction.
  • Strong experience with agentic coding tools and deep intuition about model capabilities and limitations.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar technical domains, including ML systems, research workflows, and novel infrastructure.
  • Strong focus on correctness and reliability.
  • Interest in working at the boundary between engineering and AI research.
  • Minimum education of a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Designing or scaling evaluation frameworks for ML systems.
  • Reinforcement learning infrastructure or training systems.
  • Leading technical initiatives in high-performance environments such as trading firms, quant funds, frontier research labs, or fast-moving startups.
  • Research computing, scientific infrastructure, or developer platforms at scale.
  • A strong quantitative foundation in mathematics, physics, or a related field.
  • Expertise in Python and TypeScript.

Compensation And Logistics

  • Annual salary: $405,000–$485,000 USD.
  • Anthropic expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time under its location-based hybrid policy.
  • Anthropic sponsors visas and makes reasonable efforts to obtain a visa for candidates when an offer is made, with assistance from an immigration lawyer.
  • Benefits include competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office collaboration space.
