Details
Senior Business Applications Engineer evaluates, designs, configures, installs, deploys and maintains applications that are highly impacting for Booking.com employees. They serve as the primary engineer responsible for the company-wide Business Intelligence platform. They build and maintain strong relationships with application stakeholders throughout the organization, including with infrastructure, networking and security teams. Senior Business Applications Engineer coaches, mentor and share knowledge with more junior staff.

Responsibilities
Software Systems Design
- Evaluate possible architecture solutions considering cost, business and technology requirements, and emerging technologies.
- Describe implications of changing or adding systems by maintaining a broad, high-level understanding of infrastructure and architecture.
- Apply engineering techniques (prototyping, spiking, vendor evaluation) and standards to grow the business and accelerate software development.
- Design solutions that meet current requirements and are adaptable for future enhancements.
Technical Incident Management
- Address and resolve live production issues, mitigating customer impact within SLA.
- Improve overall reliability through root cause analysis and long-term solutions.
- Contribute to postmortem processes and log live issues.
Coaching / Mentoring
- Coach, guide, and improve performance of stakeholders and colleagues by sharing experience and knowledge.
Automation and Toil Reduction
- Reduce technical debt, identify bottlenecks, and prepare systems for scaling.
- Reduce operational costs by leveraging new technologies, automation, and vendor partnerships.
- Write small software features to improve availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency.
Monitoring and Alerting Improvements
- Review and verify performance of production systems and network infrastructure using observability metrics, business KPIs, and capacity planning.
- Advise development teams on appropriate observability metrics and guide junior members.
Production Systems Best Practices
- Secure production systems and network infrastructure following company and industry security best practices.
- Ensure and improve compliance and document architecture to reduce bus factor.
- Maintain runbooks, opdocs, and procedures to restore normal operations.
Architectural Guidance
- Advise product teams toward technical solutions that meet functional, non-functional, and architectural requirements.
- Set direction for technical capabilities by evaluating and aligning target architecture improvements.
Critical Thinking and Continuous Improvement
- Identify patterns and underlying issues in complex situations and find solutions using logical and analytical thinking.
- Identify opportunities for process, system, and structural improvements and implement relevant changes.
Effective Communication
- Deliver clear, well-structured information tailored to the audience and achieve mutually agreeable solutions through active listening and adaptable communication.
Requirements
Mandatory (Must-Have) Skills
- 6+ years of experience in SAP MDG.
- Strong SAP MDG skills, including MDG-F and MDG-BP.
- Specialization in SAP MDG.
- Experience administering, growing and implementing governance for enterprise Business Intelligence tools.
- Experience implementing large-scale applications using both SaaS and off-the-shelf solutions.
Good-to-Have Skills
- SAP FICO and SAP FICA.
