About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

Details
GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps. The role involves designing, implementing, and evolving product capabilities while solving high-scope backend problems and influencing technical and product direction. You will work across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries in a high-scale, global product environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
- Make pragmatic architectural choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, and independently operated services.
- Define and promote backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, security, availability, performance, and operational readiness.
- Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues at scale.
- Participate in incident response and act as a technical owner when appropriate.
- Mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve team delivery through code and design reviews.
- Use AI in production engineering work, evaluate its effectiveness, and coach others on responsible, high-judgment use.
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to shape requirements and ensure technical decisions deliver user value.
Requirements
- Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in a complex product or service environment.
- Proficiency in modern backend languages and a deep understanding of systems programming.
- Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
- Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication.
- Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production, including architecting loops, tool use, and error-handling strategies for reliability at scale.
Helpful Experience
- High-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, or profiling.
- Containerized production operations, such as Kubernetes.
- Database performance knowledge, including PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution, and partitioning.
- Large-scale modular monoliths or event-driven systems.
- Public technical communication, open-source maintenance, or experience with developer-focused SaaS.
Work Environment
GitLab operates as a remote-first, asynchronous organization. All roles are remote, although some roles may have location-based eligibility requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
The listed United States base salary range is $139,200–$235,200 USD. The range does not include bonuses, equity, or benefits. Benefits include flexible paid time off, equity compensation and an employee stock purchase plan, a growth and development fund, parental leave, and health, financial, and well-being support.
