Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called “surges.”

The Core Automation team is building AI-powered operations to create seamless customer experiences and maximize business value. The initial focus is reimagining and automating Compliance operations with Agentic AI, then developing primitives and orchestration solutions that can scale across domains and enhance customer experiences and internal processes.

Responsibilities

  • Explore and apply advanced GenAI techniques, including large language models (LLMs) and Agentic AI, to solve complex organizational challenges.
  • Partner with and influence Operations and Compliance organizations to maximize impact.
  • Build and manage engineering teams in the Compliance domain, guiding the development of features, services, and infrastructure.
  • Plan, design, develop, and test software systems and applications, including cloud-based and internet-related tools.
  • Design scalable systems using modern cloud technology and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to turn product and technical vision into a quarterly roadmap.
  • Coach team members on design principles, coding standards, and adoption of AI productivity tools.
  • Review and ensure the security, scalability, and architectural integrity of feature designs across teams.
  • Hire, train, and grow a high-performing team focused on AI/ML solutions.
  • Lead multiple engineering efforts in parallel while maintaining high service quality standards.
  • Create and enforce processes that improve engineering quality, AI adoption, and high-impact delivery.
  • Provide technical leadership on architectural decisions and engineering processes.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to successfully deliver and operate multitenant, distributed systems at scale.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of software engineering experience.
  • At least 5 years of engineering management experience, including 2 years managing managers.
  • Strong understanding of high-quality code and software engineering processes, with the ability to foster an environment that produces them.
  • Execution-focused approach and ability to navigate ambiguity.
  • Ability to balance long-term thinking with short-term planning.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multitenant, distributed systems at scale.
  • Ability to be hands-on when needed, including writing or reviewing code and technical documents, participating in on-call rotations, leading incidents, and triaging or troubleshooting bugs.
  • Passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together.

Nice to Have

  • Experience bringing LLM-based applications into production.
  • Experience measuring and improving LLM grounding against a given corpus and reducing hallucinations.
  • Experience in Customer Support Compliance or Financial Crimes domains.

Compensation

The annual base salary range is $253,895–$298,700 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
