Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that allow financial institutions to trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. This role will design, build, and own core trading systems supporting order and execution management, algorithmic execution, settlement, multi-venue connectivity, and low-latency messaging for retail, prime, and wholesale brokerage customers.

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to participate in quarterly in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Responsibilities

Own the architecture of the end-to-end trading platform, including the sequencer, low-latency connectivity and messaging fabric, OMS/EMS, multi-venue connectivity, and execution.
Design low-latency, high-throughput systems for real-time financial products used across institutional and retail markets.
Drive reliability and performance by owning SLOs, observability, and incident response for systems where correctness and latency are critical.
Set the technical bar through code, design reviews, and standards.
Prioritize and reduce the most important technical debt.
Reduce single points of failure across the trading stack.
Build team resilience through mentorship.
Partner with Product, Risk, Security, and Compliance to turn technical vision into a roadmap.

Requirements

Hands-on architecture experience, including designing, building, deploying, and supporting 24/7 trading systems processing billions of dollars in daily transactions.
Extensive backend engineering experience and demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems.
Experience architecting an end-to-end trading platform, including OMS, front office, middle office, and multi-exchange connectivity.
Deep proficiency in low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging technologies such as Aeron, SBE, or similar.
Experience designing event-driven, highly available systems.
Experience delivering projects end-to-end, including scoping, architecture, implementation, monitoring, and iteration.
Experience building systems in regulated or financial environments where correctness, auditability, and low-latency performance are critical.
Experience making user-facing product decisions that balance engineering trade-offs with end-user quality, demonstrated through shipped products.
Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation

The annual base salary range is $253,895–$298,700 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
