Details
The Privacy Engineering Team at OpenAI integrates privacy as a foundational element across OpenAI products and systems that handle user data. The team builds production services, develops privacy-preserving techniques, and provides tools and guidance to cross-functional engineering and research partners to ensure responsible data use.
This role is located in San Francisco. Relocation assistance is available.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and implement back-end systems that power privacy and security functions within API products and consumer applications.
- Conduct threat modeling, privacy design reviews, and code-level assessments to ensure privacy and security standards are met.
- Collaborate with product managers and other engineering teams to develop new products that leverage research while maintaining privacy and security integrity.
- Work closely with legal to document and evaluate internal compliance practices and conduct internal audits to ensure alignment with legal and organizational standards.
- Coordinate and actively participate in privacy incident response efforts.
Requirements
- Experience developing secure backend systems focused on customer data protection and privacy.
- Experience building or re-engineering production systems to meet legal requirements, handle increased scale, and uphold privacy and security standards.
- Experience leading or being a significant contributor to security projects and working cross-functionally with product, engineering, and legal teams.
- Familiarity with threat modeling, secure design, privacy design reviews, and code-level security assessments.
- Strong communication skills, humility, and a willingness to take ownership of problems end-to-end.
Benefits & Compensation
- Base pay range: $245,000 - $310,000 per year (base pay may vary with market location, skills, and experience). Total compensation may include equity and performance-related bonus(es) for eligible employees.
