Engineering Manager, Sensitive Deployments

The Integrity team builds systems used to understand, prevent, and respond to misuse across OpenAI products. The team partners with Product, Policy, Safety Systems, User Operations, Security, Legal, Privacy, OpenAI for Government, and research teams to turn policy and threat models into product controls, review workflows, measurement systems, and enforcement paths.

This role leads engineering efforts for sensitive deployments, including hyperscaler and government deployments, high-trust enterprise settings, regulated environments, zero-data-retention deployments, and privacy-constrained deployments. The work includes addressing risks from increasingly agentic workloads, where harm can emerge across sequences of actions rather than a single prompt.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for complex, high-impact deployments in sensitive environments.
• Own end-to-end delivery across prototyping, piloting, production launch, and ongoing operation.
• Partner with senior customer stakeholders, technical teams, implementation partners, Product, Research, Security, Global Affairs, Sales, Solutions, and customer technical teams.
• Set standards for architecture, code quality, testing, observability, reliability, security, and operational readiness.
• Translate field learnings into reusable tools, playbooks, reference architectures, product requirements, and roadmap feedback.
• Balance speed, quality, security, safety, and customer-specific needs.
• Serve as a technical escalation point for high-ambiguity, urgent, or mission-sensitive deployments.
• Coach engineers on technical judgment, customer communication, prioritization, and operating under pressure.
• Build team mechanisms that enable the group to scale without unnecessary process or complexity.

Requirements

• 10+ years of engineering or technical delivery experience, including 4+ years managing high-performing engineers.
• Experience leading customer-facing, forward-deployed, platform, infrastructure, security, or applied AI teams through ambiguous production deployments.
• Experience working with government, defense, intelligence, public sector, critical infrastructure, or similarly sensitive or regulated customers.
• Ability to engage senior executives, mission owners, security stakeholders, and deeply technical individual contributors.
• Strong technical depth across full-stack software, cloud infrastructure, APIs, data systems, security, and production operations.
• Ability to review or write production-grade code in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar languages.
• Understanding of deployment models involving Azure, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, identity, access controls, encryption, monitoring, and compliance requirements.
• Ability to turn one-off customer work into reusable systems, platform capabilities, and durable team practices.
• Ability to simplify complex work, make sound decisions under pressure, and communicate tradeoffs clearly.
