The Private Computing team works across product, engineering, security, and safety to build advanced privacy products and infrastructure at OpenAI. Its mission is to provide world-class security features so users' private data remains private, even from OpenAI. The team uses confidential computing, trusted execution environments, and end-to-end encryption to ship product features across ChatGPT, the API, and future consumer devices.
The role involves designing, building, and scaling novel privacy features and infrastructure across ChatGPT, the API, and future consumer devices.
Responsibilities
- Ship quickly while balancing difficult trade-offs in complex domains.
- Build core abstractions for trusted execution environments and end-to-end encryption.
- Build product features for private inference and storage across ChatGPT, the API, and future consumer devices.
- Update build systems to increase trust and verifiability.
- Integrate with safety and integrity infrastructure.
- Operate systems at scale with high reliability, including participating in an on-call rotation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across product, engineering, security, safety, policy, and legal.
Requirements
- Care deeply about user privacy and security.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience building and scaling confidential computing or encryption technologies in production environments.
- Experience with Kubernetes and cloud orchestration systems.
- A commitment to building and operating scalable, reliable, and secure systems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and drive alignment in the face of difficult trade-offs.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapid change.
Workplace And Location
This role is based in San Francisco, California. The position follows a hybrid model with four days per week in the office. Relocation assistance is available to eligible new employees.
