Details
The Safety Systems organization builds platforms and tools that help ensure OpenAI's models can be safely deployed in the real world. The Safety Engineering team works with researchers, product teams, and policy teams to create reliable, scalable systems for measuring risk, enforcing safeguards, and improving model behavior in production.
This role focuses on building full-stack internal tools for Safety Systems teams, including tools supporting mental health and other vulnerable-user protections. The work will help identify and fix safety issues, improve the feedback loop between policy, data, and model training, and potentially transform successful AI-assisted safety workflows into external-facing safety products.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end development of internal tools that improve the safety of OpenAI's models, with a focus on areas such as mental health and vulnerable-user protections.
- Partner with Safety Systems researchers, engineers, and model policy creators to understand workflows, pain points, and requirements, and translate them into durable product solutions.
- Build full-stack experiences for model policy workflows, including labeling and inspecting data, analyzing and reviewing failure cases, and surfacing insights for iteration.
- Optimize internal applications for usability, speed, and scale to increase team velocity and reduce time to fix safety issues.
- Transform successful AI-assisted safety workflows into external-facing safety products that empower developers to build safer AI and help advance industry standards for AI safety.
Requirements
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience at technology and product-driven companies.
- Proficiency with JavaScript, React, and other web technologies.
- Proficiency with at least one backend language; the team uses Python.
- Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
- Interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning; direct experience is not required.
- Enthusiasm for partnering closely with researchers and policy writers to ship tools that improve model safety.
