Details

The Monetization team is a cross-functional group spanning engineering, product, research, and design. It is building foundational systems to scale access to intelligence responsibly through user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products, including next-generation ads experiences.

The role focuses on designing and developing systems that turn advertiser feeds, such as retail and travel feeds, into relevant and reliably delivered ads. The engineer will work across the full ads lifecycle, including catalog ingestion and organization, efficient retrieval systems, ranking model integration, and large-scale ad serving.

The role is based in San Francisco and Mountain View.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build pipelines that ingest, validate, normalize, and refresh merchant product feeds.
  • Develop scalable catalog storage and indexing systems for large inventories, reflecting changes in product availability, pricing, and attributes.
  • Build search and retrieval systems to identify relevant and eligible products across merchant catalogs.
  • Partner with Ads ML to connect product retrieval with ranking models through dependable interfaces, features, and serving infrastructure.
  • Engineer low-latency, high-throughput ad delivery systems with strong reliability and correctness guarantees.
  • Design real-time event pipelines and distributed storage supporting catalog freshness, serving decisions, and downstream feedback.
  • Build observability and quality controls to detect feed errors, stale inventory, indexing delays, and serving issues.
  • Define technical direction and drive complex projects from early prototypes through production deployment and operation.
  • Operate systems with strong engineering rigor through testing, monitoring, privacy and security reviews, and operational practices.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems, with direct ownership of product ads retrieval, ranking infrastructure, or delivery.
  • Understanding of merchant feeds and shopping systems, including how catalog quality, product availability, and freshness affect relevance and ad performance.
  • Experience building shopping or product ads systems at platforms such as Google Shopping, YouTube, Amazon, or a comparable environment.
  • Alternatively, Senior Staff-level scope or above, leading the architecture and delivery of large-scale catalogs, search and indexing platforms, ad serving, or related backend systems.
  • Experience building low-latency, high-throughput services and data pipelines with demanding reliability and correctness requirements.
  • Ability to reason across ingestion, storage, indexing, retrieval, ranking, and serving, balancing freshness, relevance, latency, and cost.
  • Comfort partnering with machine-learning teams to bring ranking models and signals into dependable production systems.
  • Ability to define technical direction in an ambiguous 0-to-1 environment and independently drive complex work across teams.
  • Clear communication and technical decision-making grounded in user value, merchant experience, and long-term system health.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $347,000–$445,000 per year.
  • Equity and performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for health, dependent care, and commuter expenses.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, company holidays, paid office closures, and paid sick or safe time.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily office meals and eligible meal delivery credits.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.
