Details

Anthropic is seeking fullstack software engineers to build safety and oversight mechanisms for AI systems. The Safeguards team develops systems to monitor models, prevent misuse, ensure user well-being, detect unwanted model behaviors, and prevent disallowed model use. Team placement occurs after the interview process based on candidate interests, experience, and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build internal review tools for abuse investigations, including dashboards, case queues, and evidence viewers that support fast and accurate high-volume, high-stakes decisions.
  • Build interfaces for human supervision of agents, including streaming output, interruption and approval flows, and clear provenance for every agent action.
  • Surface abuse patterns to research teams through visualizations and exploration tools that make emerging patterns understandable.
  • Own frontend architecture for tools handling sensitive data at scale, including performance with large datasets, correctness under real-time updates, and end-to-end access controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or comparable experience.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and modern React.
  • Comfort using Python for backend work.
  • Ability to work across the full stack.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8 or more years of software engineering experience, excluding internships and co-ops.
  • Experience building data-dense internal tools or operator interfaces rather than only marketing or consumer-facing surfaces.
  • Experience with integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation.
  • Experience building trust and safety detection mechanisms and interventions for AI/ML systems.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, jailbreak attacks, and other adversarial inputs.
  • Experience working closely with operational teams to build custom internal tooling.

Education and Experience

The minimum education requirement is a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The required field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience. Required years of experience correlate with the internal job-level requirements.

Compensation

The annual salary range is $405,000–$485,000 USD.

Work Policy and Logistics

Anthropic currently expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time. Anthropic sponsors visas for eligible roles and candidates and retains an immigration lawyer to assist with the process.

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space for collaboration.
