Details

Anthropic is hiring Software Engineers for the Memory & Search team, which builds how Claude remembers users and finds relevant information across Claude.ai, Cowork, and Claude Code. The work spans user-facing experiences and shared infrastructure, including memory services, indexing, retrieval, and vector search.

The team is seeking product engineers who have shipped user-facing products at scale, have strong product judgment, and have built agentic systems in which models, tools, and user interfaces work together. The role involves running short, demo-driven experiments, evaluating real-world usage, and developing memory and search features while considering privacy, consent, and enterprise controls.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship memory and search experiences in Claude.ai, Cowork, and Claude Code, owning work end to end from backend services through model tools to user interfaces.
  • Run product experiments on the memory and search stack, including forming hypotheses, building demos, testing with users, measuring results, and making persevere-or-pivot decisions.
  • Shape how Claude uses memory and retrieval in its agentic loop, including what the model stores, when it searches, how results are ranked and presented, and how users remain in control.
  • Define and track product metrics that measure whether memory improves Claude’s usefulness, and build evaluations to maintain quality as the system evolves.
  • Improve search relevance and recall across conversations and memories using embeddings, hybrid retrieval, ranking, and user interfaces for presenting results.
  • Partner with product, design, privacy, legal, and safeguards teams to ship features that respect user consent and enterprise requirements, including customer-managed encryption keys and data retention policies.
  • Improve product quality through design reviews, code reviews, and standards for latency, polish, and reliability.
  • Participate in on-call support for owned systems.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating user-facing products used by a large number of people, including their backend services.
  • Experience building agentic systems or LLM-powered products, including tool use, retrieval, and prompt or context design.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and TypeScript, with experience across backend services and web front ends.
  • Track record of taking a product or feature from idea to launch and iterating based on usage data and user feedback.
  • Experience defining product metrics and running experiments to support decisions.
  • Strong product judgment and ability to identify and resolve product quality issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience working with product managers, designers, and non-engineering partners.
  • Interest in AI safety and Anthropic’s mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The field of study must be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a founder, early-stage engineer, or engineer who has taken a product from zero to one.
  • Experience building search or retrieval systems, including embeddings, vector search, hybrid lexical and semantic retrieval, or ranking.
  • Experience building evaluations for LLM or machine learning systems or measuring retrieval and ranking quality.
  • Experience with consumer products with strong retention or personalization systems.
  • Experience shipping features that handle sensitive data or meet enterprise requirements such as customer-managed encryption keys, data residency, or HIPAA.
  • Experience with latency-sensitive, performance-critical product work.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or setting technical direction for a team.

Compensation

The annual salary range is $405,000–$485,000 USD.
