Details

The UX team uncovers insights about users’ needs and goals and translates them into valuable, usable software solutions across desktop, web, and mobile products. The team supports the Bloomberg Terminal, premium desktop and web products, and internal technology platforms through UX research, product design, prototyping, and technical writing.

This role leads a team of designers supporting one of Bloomberg’s business verticals. The team leader will set team strategy, balance near-term delivery needs with longer-term direction, partner with Product, Engineering, and senior leaders, and drive strategic UX department initiatives. The role also includes defining team processes and practices and mentoring, inspiring, and coaching team members.

As a hands-on UX leader, the successful candidate will contribute strong design skills, make complex systems intuitive and valuable, drive clarity through ambiguity, partner with end users and subject matter experts, and take ownership of a domain to develop conceptual frameworks, interaction designs, and overall user experiences for new products and major enhancements.

Responsibilities

  • Translate user needs, business objectives, and technology capabilities into innovative design solutions using analytical and conceptual thinking.
  • Lead the full design process, including customer research using qualitative and quantitative methods, conceptualization, storyboarding, detailed design, and collaboration with engineering teams on implementation.
  • Collaborate with business teams to adopt user-centered processes and ground design decisions in a detailed understanding of customer workflows and needs.
  • Conduct workshops with business teams, subject matter experts, and engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers to support product development according to design specifications.
  • Build partnerships with cross-functional teams and continuously identify opportunities to increase the team’s impact.
  • Set team strategy and define new team processes and practices.
  • Mentor, inspire, coach, and develop design team members.
  • Lead UX initiatives while contributing hands-on design work and upholding quality standards.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience as a UX people manager, with the ability to demonstrate leadership through hands-on design work when appropriate.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a UX or product designer in an individual contributor capacity.
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Information Architecture, Visual Communication, or a related design field.
  • Track record applying user-centered design practices, including user research to address complex design problems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to advocate for user needs throughout the design process.
  • Experience designing complex user workflows, decision-support systems, large dataset visualizations, framework-level patterns, information architecture, and graphic or visual designs.
  • Experience with usability research and analysis.
  • Project management skills to take projects through the design lifecycle from design to release, independently identify required information, and execute plans to gather and synthesize it.
  • Experience developing design team members.
  • Excellent collaboration, self-starting, and growth-mindset capabilities.
  • Experience with institutional finance and capital markets is desirable.
  • Knowledge of or experience with AI platforms, software engineering, and engineering tools is desirable.
  • A portfolio containing two design projects with artifacts covering the project lifecycle, such as research, personas, sketches, user journeys, task flows, wireframes, and storyboards. The portfolio should include detailed wireframes illustrating step-by-step workflows for solutions to complex problems and demonstrate how the design process informed design decisions.

Benefits

Benefits may include merit increases, incentive compensation for exempt roles, paid holidays, paid time off, medical, dental, and vision coverage, short- and long-term disability benefits, a 401(k) match, life insurance, and wellness programs.
