AI Backend Engineer

Details

Our AI team builds GenAI applications that go into production at one of the Netherlands' largest banks. The team works bankwide on use cases including voice agents handling thousands of contact-center calls, AI lending assistants that support lenders in writing credit proposals, and agentic workflows used by customers and employees.

The role focuses on building, deploying, and operating secure, resilient backend services and infrastructure for production AI systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services and Azure cloud infrastructure for GenAI use cases, including Voice AI, RAG pipelines, and agentic workflows.
• Build and maintain secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines for production systems.
• Ensure reliability and performance through monitoring, logging, observability, and optimization.
• Collaborate with AI engineers to integrate GenAI capabilities into production-ready systems.
• Partner with business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable backend and infrastructure solutions.
• Own the full system lifecycle: design, build, deploy, operate, and continuously improve production systems.
• Contribute to engineering excellence through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and backend and infrastructure best practices.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience.
• Proven experience building and deploying Python backend services or platforms that run in production.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure; Azure is required.
• Experience designing or maintaining APIs and distributed systems handling real-world usage.
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated deployments.
• Experience shipping reliable production systems and explaining what worked, what did not, and why.
• Experience integrating GenAI or LLM components is a plus but is not required.
• An inventive approach and an entrepreneurial attitude.
• Ability to take ownership from initial cloud architecture design through production deployment and ongoing operation.
• Ability to balance speed, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Interest in GenAI and how it fits into real production systems.
• Clear communication of technical decisions to engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
• Willingness to mentor junior engineers and support their systems design and infrastructure development.
• Evidence of initiative and craftsmanship through something built outside of the day job, such as tooling, infrastructure, or a side project.

Working Environment

You will join a 25+ person AI team within ABN AMRO's Innovation department. The team operates with a startup mindset within a large bank, using fast feedback loops, direct communication with business leadership, and real deployment at scale. Hybrid working is offered.
