About the Role
As an Audiovisual (AV) Engineer at OpenAI you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing and ensuring the availability, reliability, and exceptional ease-of use of our conference room audio visual and video conferencing infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have expert-level experience in audiovisual design, programming and implementation of enterprise AV systems and moderate but demonstrable networking and general IT capabilities.
This is a hybrid role and will require 3 days a week in our San Francisco office.
In this role, you will:
Responsibilities
- Develop, own, and continuously improve global conference room AV and video conferencing standards, with a focus on reliability, consistency, scalability, and five 9s availability.
- Design and manage enterprise conference room standards, including room archetypes, approved hardware stacks, user experience requirements, control patterns, network requirements, and supportability expectations.
- Produce and maintain standard AV drawing packages, design templates, build documentation, and release/revision cycles for global deployment.
- Establish scalable systems and processes for managing the full AV technology lifecycle, including evaluation, standardization, deployment, support, refresh, and retirement.
- Define design requirements and technical patterns for AV monitoring, alerting, automation, and operational handoff so global room standards can be supported, measured, and improved at scale.
- Oversee AV control code, programming patterns, and network requirements to move from project-specific implementations to a first-party global standard deployed consistently across offices.
- Lead AV/VC design standards and technical review for new global office buildouts, ensuring each project aligns with OpenAI’s global AV architecture and user experience goals.
- Define programming, commissioning, QA, and operational handoff requirements for conference rooms and AV spaces.
- Develop and manage integrations between AV systems and core IT services, including monitoring, alerting, asset management, ticketing, calendar systems, and support workflows.
- Partner closely with ITAV Events, ITAV Upkeep, Network Engineering, Real Estate, Design and Construction, and Security to ensure AV standards meet business, operational, and technical needs.
- Own lifecycle management for conference room AV/VC technology, including vendor roadmaps, firmware strategy, end-of-life planning, approved substitutions, and global refresh planning.
- Maintain deep knowledge of AV/VC industry trends, emerging technologies, enterprise platform changes, and best practices for deploying AV at global scale.
Requirements
- 8+ years experience in design, installation, and troubleshooting of enterprise AV including direct experience implementing and using Google meet, Logitech and QSYS hardware at a global scale.
- Experience with enterprise networking technologies and architectures (Multicast routing, switch configuration, QoS, IGMP).
- Advanced QSYS programming experience.
- Cloud hosting experience, especially for highly available AV services like monitoring and alerting, and distributed AV transport.
- Proven experience managing global AV office deployments of over 300 av spaces.
- Demonstrable CAD (Revit, AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Visio) drawing package production experience.
- Event space design and commissioning experience with production equipment like Vizrt, AnalogWay, Yamaha, Panasonic, QSYS, NDI, Dante Ross, ST2110, Madi, etc..
- AV Scripting experience (Lua, Appscript, Python). Bonus points for MCP integration experience.
- Expert with video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Meet, Teams).
- Experience developing RFPs (Request for Proposal) for AV integration vendors and managing the bid/build process.
- Experience with wayfinding and conference room booking hardware and software.
- Deep understanding of AV over IP (QLAN, ST 2110, Dante, NDI) and how to deploy it safely in a corporate network environment.
- Experience with IT ticketing systems and maintaining support SLAs.
