About the Team

OpenAI's Financial Engineering (FinEng) team powers how revenue flows through its products, including pricing and packaging, checkout, payments, subscriptions, and the financial infrastructure behind them.

The team operates at the intersection of Product, Engineering, Risk, Finance, and Go-to-Market to ensure that paying for OpenAI products is seamless, reliable, scalable, and globally optimized. As OpenAI expands internationally and across product surfaces, FinEng plays a critical role in enabling durable, efficient revenue growth.

About the Role

As a Data Scientist for Financial Engineering, you will drive the measurement, experimentation, and optimization work that powers OpenAI's monetization infrastructure.

You will define how checkout, payments, subscriptions, and pricing systems are measured and improved globally, balancing conversion, risk, cost, reliability, and user experience. As a senior individual contributor, you will establish source-of-truth metrics, design rigorous experiments, develop analytical frameworks, and translate complex findings into decisions that directly affect revenue and international growth.

This role is based in San Francisco, California. OpenAI uses a hybrid model requiring three days per week in the office and offers relocation support.

Responsibilities

  • Define key metrics and guardrails across checkout, payments, subscriptions, and pricing.
  • Design experiments, staged rollouts, and offline incrementality studies.
  • Improve conversion, payment performance, retention, and involuntary churn.
  • Develop pricing, elasticity, foreign exchange (FX), and localization frameworks.
  • Partner with Data Engineering to build trusted datasets and operational monitoring.
  • Turn complex analysis into recommendations that shape product and business decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor other data scientists.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in data science, experimentation, or product analytics.
  • Experience with monetization, payments, checkout, subscriptions, or pricing.
  • Advanced SQL and Python skills, with strong expertise in experimentation and causal inference.
  • A track record of independently leading high-impact, cross-functional analytical work.
  • Strong product judgment and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $293,000–$515,000 per year.
  • Equity and performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax accounts for health and dependent care expenses, as well as commuter expenses.

  • Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, company holidays, office closures, and paid sick or safe time.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily meals in offices and eligible meal delivery credits.
