About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

Details
Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Finance Engineering team builds the platform that ensures finance events from usage and billing, compute, infrastructure assets, leases, products, and pricing models reach the books correctly. The platform includes a unified entry point for finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once and supports audit-grade controls.
The Engineering Manager will lead and grow the team responsible for building and operating this platform. The role partners with engineering teams in Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure on shared contracts and APIs, and works with product owners and finance operations to define priorities and requirements. A finance background is not required; experience leading backend systems where correctness matters is relevant.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a team of engineers by hiring, coaching, and maintaining a high bar for engineering quality.
- Own delivery of the finance-events entry point and its governed contracts, as well as the accounting ledger and engine, ensuring every event is posted exactly once and can be traced to its source.
- Be accountable for production services used in real time by other engineering teams, including tax and collections services in the billing flow.
- Provide finance applications and agents with platform support, including SDKs and frameworks, scoped access, SOX guardrails, observability, and capabilities not provided by Claude products out of the box.
- Define and own reliability and correctness standards, including service-level objectives, tests for key upstream calculations on every change, and daily source-to-books accuracy and completeness checks.
- Align technical design, data contracts, and APIs with engineering leaders in Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure.
- Reduce the time required for Finance to support new products, programs, and compute buildouts.
Requirements
- Experience leading teams that build and operate high-volume backend systems where correctness matters, such as ledgers, billing, payments, metering, or other systems of record.
- Experience building or operating event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill, with a strong understanding of production correctness.
- Sound judgment regarding platform boundaries, data contracts, and API design.
- Experience hiring and growing engineers and setting engineering standards for platforms.
- Ability to collaborate across functions with upstream engineering teams, Finance, and auditors, and clearly explain technical trade-offs to non-engineering partners in writing and verbally.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of engineering management experience and eight or more years of total industry experience.
- Experience building developer platforms or paved paths used by other builders.
- Experience with Go and streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
- Experience building with large language models and agents, including MCP.
- Experience building or operating a ledger or sub-ledger, with working knowledge of double-entry accounting.
- Experience managing teams through audit and compliance work, including SOX change management, segregation of duties, and audit trails.
- Experience with ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials or Oracle Financials.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation and benefits.
- Optional equity donation matching.
- Generous vacation and parental leave.
- Flexible working hours.
- Office collaboration space.
Work Arrangement and Immigration
Staff are currently expected to work from one of Anthropic’s offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time. Anthropic sponsors visas and makes reasonable efforts to support visa applications, with assistance from an immigration lawyer.
