Details

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Finance Engineering team is developing a platform for finance events, including an append-only ledger and accounting engine that processes each event exactly once, supports replay, and provides audit-grade correctness.

The role involves building distributed systems that accurately represent financial data, support Claude agents and human users through shared APIs and controls, and integrate with Billing, Compute, Infrastructure, finance operations, internal audit, and product teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the front door into finance, including APIs for applications and agents, event buses for publishing systems, vendor application and report adapters, data-quality gates, and processing with exactly-once posting, replay, and backfill.
  • Drive development of the accounting ledger and engine, including an append-only ledger with idempotent posting, a rules framework that converts business events into journal entries, ERP translation, and period locks.
  • Design and build SDKs and frameworks for finance applications and agents.
  • Build controls into the platform as code, including immutable audit trails, maker-checker controls, scoped access, and segregation of duties.
  • Build and operate production services used by other engineering teams in real time, including tax and collections services in billing flows.
  • Own reliability targets for uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness.
  • Shape the platform's technical direction through architecture, engineering standards, and design reviews.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience in a statically typed language such as Go, Java, or Rust, or Python at scale.
  • Experience designing and operating high-volume, event-driven systems using publish/subscribe or streaming architectures, with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill.
  • Experience designing relational data models and writing SQL for complex, versioned data.
  • Experience designing APIs, SDKs, and service-to-service integrations used by other teams.
  • Experience building systems with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements.
  • Experience translating requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing design documents.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of experience.
  • Experience building developer platforms or paved paths.
  • Experience with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Experience building a ledger, sub-ledger, billing, or payments system.
  • Familiarity with accounting concepts such as double-entry accounting and journal entries.
  • Familiarity with internal controls and audit concepts, including audit trails, segregation of duties, and change management.
  • Exposure to ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials.

Benefits

Anthropic offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office spaces for collaboration. Anthropic sponsors visas and states that it will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa for candidates who receive an offer, with support from an immigration lawyer.

The location-based hybrid policy expects staff to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
