About the Team
Service Infrastructure enables Stripe’s engineers to build and ship products using efficient, reliable, service-oriented architectures. The organization operates at the boundary between Infrastructure and Product, engineering Stripe’s service frameworks, standard user-facing API semantics, asynchronous orchestration platforms, developer tooling, and mission-critical product infrastructure such as webhook fulfillment.
Key priorities include delivering an excellent internal developer experience, enabling engineers to effectively leverage infrastructure platforms, and driving systemic improvements to Stripe’s API availability.
Responsibilities
- Lead multiple teams within the Service Infrastructure organization.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and product engineering leaders to advance Stripe’s architecture.
- Operate some of the company’s most critical services.
- Collaborate with product engineering teams to develop frameworks and abstractions that accelerate important product launches.
- Collaborate with high-visibility teams and stakeholders to support key engineering initiatives.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership covering architecture and design, vision and direction, requirements setting, and incident response processes.
- Understand user needs and pain points to prioritize engineering work that enables product engineers to ship features quickly and reliably.
- Work with leaders across the company to drive architectural improvements.
- Lead and manage processes that help infrastructure teams work effectively and interface with the rest of Stripe.
- Manage and grow a team of engineers and engineering leaders, including line managers, to deliver high-impact projects on schedule and with high quality.
- Partner with recruiting to attract and hire top talent and define hiring strategies.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a manager of managers, leading managers and senior individual contributors across teams of at least 25 people.
- 3+ years of experience managing teams that ship and operate critical distributed-systems infrastructure.
- Experience leading staff or principal engineers and driving alignment among highly technical collaborators on architectural or strategic decisions.
- Experience managing effective incident response processes and on-call rotations.
- Experience managing engineering teams working on API design, abstractions, frameworks, or client libraries, including internal or external developer products.
- Experience managing demanding or conflicting stakeholder and partner relationships.
- Experience driving business and product success in a highly cross-functional organization with significant autonomy and responsibility.
- Experience building a team, defining its mission, and executing on its goals, including recruiting, mentoring, and retaining talent.
- Ability to work cross-functionally, think rigorously, communicate effectively, and make or coordinate difficult decisions and trade-offs.
- Experience leading partially remote teams and colocated teams across distant geographies.
- Ability to encourage a healthy, challenging, and supportive work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of management experience, including 5+ years as a manager of managers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for leadership, users, and company-wide audiences.
- Experience changing culture across large organizations.
- Experience with infrastructure platforms such as databases, logging, event streams, metrics, and caching.
- Experience building products with statically typed Java and dynamically typed Ruby.
- Experience developing with and contributing to open-source framework ecosystems.
- Experience developing sustainable, in-house framework and abstraction ecosystems in large engineering organizations.
- Experience building with AWS or other cloud-provider primitives.
