This role sits within the Office of the CTO as a founding engineer embedded in Compliance. The engineer will identify high-value workflow opportunities, rapidly prototype solutions using Coinbase's existing AI platform, and drive measurable adoption of AI tooling across the Compliance organization. Responsibilities
- Embed with Compliance leadership and frontline teams to identify automation opportunities with significant business leverage, developing an in-depth understanding of workflows such as transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory change management, and exam preparation.

- Own the Compliance automation roadmap in partnership with the Chief Compliance Officer and Compliance leadership.
- Translate complex regulatory workflows, including case resolution, trade surveillance, risk assessment, and policy management, into engineering requirements.
- Clearly communicate engineering constraints to Compliance stakeholders.
- Define the build-versus-buy strategy for Compliance tooling, evaluating whether Coinbase should build internally, adopt solutions from partner teams, procure from vendors, or retire existing tools.
- Ensure automated compliance outputs are traceable, reviewable, and defensible to regulators through auditability, approval gates, evidence retention, and human-in-the-loop controls.
- Drive adoption through brown-bag sessions, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops with Compliance teams.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated ability to ship production systems in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments. Greenfield experience is a strong plus.
- Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design for high-stakes compliance outputs.
- Ability to work with non-technical domain experts, quickly understand complex workflows, and translate them into engineering requirements.
- Familiarity with compliance and regulatory systems concepts, including transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, regulatory filing workflows, case management, and audit-ready data handling.
- Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration concepts, including agent handoffs, escalation, and auditability.
- Experience in forward-deployed engineering, solutions engineering, or an embedded technical advisory capacity, ideally in compliance technology, RegTech, or financial services environments.
- Responsible use of generative AI, with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
