iOS Engineer, Applied Foundations

OpenAI’s Applications Engineering organization builds and operates products that bring its research to users and developers worldwide. The Applied Foundations team owns core product and platform layers, including identity and access, safety, payments, and commerce across OpenAI’s applications.

The role involves building core mobile experiences and reusable iOS foundations for account management, family features, payments, safety, and interactions with OpenAI products. The engineer will own complex client-side systems spanning UI, networking, local state, payment integrations, and Apple platform integrations, while collaborating with backend, product, and safety teams to shape architecture for OpenAI’s mobile ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Build and ship new iOS experiences that showcase the power of AI.
• Optimize application performance, reliability, and responsiveness at global scale.
• Design and maintain shared iOS frameworks and primitives for account, trust, and commerce flows used across OpenAI’s mobile applications.
• Establish robust testing frameworks and refine application architecture for long-term maintainability.
• Collaborate with product, design, research, and backend teams to deliver high-impact features.
• Provide technical leadership in shaping OpenAI’s iOS platform.

Requirements

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven experience building high-quality iOS applications in production, especially reliable and resilient systems at scale.
• Experience owning complex, business-critical mobile systems end-to-end.
• Experience making deep architectural tradeoffs on iOS.
• Fluency in Swift and familiarity with the Apple development ecosystem, including Xcode, UIKit, and SwiftUI.
• Strong focus on performance, security, and user experience.
• Ability to work cross-functionally to deliver ambitious product ideas.
