Details

OpenAI's Identity team builds foundational systems that enable people, organizations, devices, and agents to securely access OpenAI products. The team works across consumer and enterprise experiences, including account structures, sign-in, authentication, recovery, privacy, permissions, administration, and agent identity. It also defines new models for authorization and trust across human-to-agent and agent-to-agent interactions.

The role leads design for foundational identity experiences across OpenAI's products, making permissions, access, risk, and administration clear, safe, and usable. The work spans established identity challenges and emerging interaction models, including how users understand what an agent can access, who or what it is acting on behalf of, and when confirmation or stronger authentication should appear. The designer will work closely with product, engineering, security, privacy, and design teams to translate complex policies and technical systems into coherent, trustworthy experiences.

This role is based in OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design direction for identity, account security, permissions, and administrative experiences across OpenAI's consumer and enterprise products.
  • Design and ship experiences spanning sign-in, authentication, account recovery, device accounts, privacy, access controls, governance, and remediation.
  • Define mental models and interaction patterns for human-to-agent and agent-to-agent identity, authorization, and trust.
  • Help users understand what people, systems, and agents can access or do on their behalf.
  • Design security checks and confirmation flows that protect sensitive actions while minimizing unnecessary friction.
  • Partner with product management, engineering, security, privacy, and design peers to shape strategy, roadmap, and execution.
  • Navigate complex roles, policies, dependencies, and product states to create systems that remain coherent as they scale.
  • Contribute to and evolve the design systems and patterns used across OpenAI's identity experiences.

Requirements

  • Systems-oriented product thinking and the ability to reason across complex states, dependencies, policies, and user types.
  • Experience designing role-based access or permissions for organizations with multiple teams, resources, or levels of administration.
  • Understanding of how to balance security, usability, and business needs in high-stakes workflows.
  • Strong UX/UI and interaction design skills, with a high bar for contemporary craft, clarity, and quality.
  • Ability to turn complicated technical capabilities and policies into mental models that users can understand and trust.
  • Comfort shaping direction while underlying technology and user expectations are evolving.
  • Experience with enterprise, platform, desktop, infrastructure, or similarly complex product environments.
  • Interest in establishing new conventions for identity and access as AI agents increasingly act on behalf of people and organizations.
