Details

Safety Systems works to ensure OpenAI’s capable models can be developed and deployed responsibly through evaluations, safeguards, red teaming, deployment decisions, and systems for understanding and reducing risk. The Trustworthy AI team is expanding its safety transparency function, which creates public artifacts explaining technical safety work, including system cards, the Deployment Safety Hub, safety-related blogs, governance documents, data visualizations, and interactive tools.

The Safety Transparency Editor will own the editorial quality of key safety transparency artifacts and systems. This hands-on role involves writing precise explanations of complex technical safety topics, identifying the central narrative, determining which details and caveats matter, providing supporting context and evidence, and communicating both safety measures and remaining uncertainties. The role also requires using AI tools and internal evidence to improve editorial workflows and build systems that make transparency work more scalable and consistent.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the narrative directly responsible individual for system cards and related transparency artifacts from initiation through publication.
  • Partner with Safety Programs, researchers, evaluators, red-teamers, policy experts, legal teams, communications partners, product marketing, and launch teams.
  • Translate technical findings into rigorous, accessible, public-facing materials.
  • Write clear and precise explanations of highly technical safety topics without sacrificing nuance.
  • Shape the editorial structure and narrative arc of transparency artifacts.
  • Determine what context, caveats, explanations, and supporting evidence are needed.
  • Improve repeatable editorial processes, templates, and publication workflows.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate drafting, synthesize source materials, identify precedents, prepare reviewer packets, and improve consistency.
  • Build systems and workflows that make transparency efforts faster, more scalable, and more effective.
  • Support blogs, governance documents, technical explainers, and other technical safety communications.
  • Help evolve the Deployment Safety Hub and related transparency surfaces.

Example Projects

  • Drive the narrative, framing, technical writing, and editing for a system card supporting a major model launch.
  • Translate novel evaluation methodologies, preparedness frameworks, and mitigation approaches for policymakers, journalists, researchers, and external experts.
  • Build an AI-assisted workflow to improve the consistency, quality, and efficiency of the safety transparency practice.
  • Help shape the Deployment Safety Hub as a trusted destination for understanding OpenAI’s technical safety work.

Requirements

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to make highly technical topics understandable without sacrificing precision.
  • Strong editorial judgment and the ability to identify the narrative thread in complex and ambiguous material.
  • Strong execution instincts and the ability to own complex projects from start to finish.
  • Ability to synthesize diverse inputs into structured, publication-ready artifacts.
  • Ability to build trust and work closely with technical experts without oversimplifying their work.
  • Deeply AI-native working approach, with an instinct for automation, systematization, and process improvement.
  • Commitment to rigor, intellectual honesty, accuracy, and responsible communication of uncertainty.
  • Confidence in using independent judgment while remaining humble, evidence-driven, and open to feedback.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar technical domains quickly and develop fluency in frontier AI safety concepts.
