Senior Backend Engineer

Details

Langfuse ingests terabytes of AI tracing data per day. This role focuses on making Langfuse fast and affordable at scale by owning the ingestion pipeline, optimizing ClickHouse data models and queries, and building backend abstractions for data-heavy features.

You will operate Langfuse Cloud across multiple production environments and make self-hosting effortless, from a single Docker Compose setup to enterprise-grade Helm chart deployments. Langfuse is now part of ClickHouse, providing access to the engineers who built the database powering the platform.

Responsibilities

• Own and optimize the ingestion pipeline, improving throughput, latency, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Design ClickHouse schemas, optimize merge strategies, tune batch inserts, and write and review analytical queries for dashboards and the user interface.
• Build infrastructure-heavy features such as LLM-as-a-Judge, large-scale alerting, client-code execution, and batch dataset operations.
• Run load tests against production data to validate ClickHouse schema, migration, and query optimizations.
• Prototype table designs, run them against real traffic, and compare results before committing changes.
• Scale the infrastructure for complex long-running agent observability and real-time evaluation.
• Support deployments ranging from Docker Compose to enterprise-grade Helm charts.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering skills and an interest in database internals, query optimization, and distributed systems.
• Experience with analytical databases, data pipelines, or high-throughput event processing.
• Comfortable reading and writing TypeScript and SQL.
• ClickHouse experience is a plus but is not required.
• Ability to organize your work and make strong decisions about what to build and how to ship it.
• Interest in open-source software and willingness to discuss users' scaling challenges.
• Ability to thrive in a small, accountable team where work is highly visible.
• A computer science or quantitative degree is preferred.
