Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that let financial institutions trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Senior Data Engineer, Market Data on the Institutional Markets team, you will build and operate systems that capture, normalize, and distribute real-time market data across Coinbase at low latency, including feed handlers, venue connectors, and the distribution layer of a unified trading platform.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain market data components, including feed handlers, normalization pipelines, distribution systems, and venue connectivity.
- Design and implement low-latency, high-throughput services for real-time market data consumed by trading systems.
- Drive reliability and performance improvements through observability, on-call participation, and incident response.
- Write high-quality, well-tested code and contribute to engineering standards on a lean team.
- Partner with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver market data capabilities supporting Coinbase's institutional trading roadmap.
Requirements
- 3+ years of backend engineering experience building and maintaining production low-latency systems.
- Hands-on experience with market data infrastructure, such as feed handlers, normalization, or distribution.
- Proficiency in low-latency Java or C++.
- Familiarity with high-throughput messaging frameworks such as Aeron, SBE, or similar technologies.
- Familiarity with venue and exchange connectivity and market data protocols, including FIX, ITCH/OUCH, and multicast.
- A track record of shipping features end-to-end and operating them in production.
- Responsible use of generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
Compensation
The annual base salary range is $191,250–$225,000 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.” Candidates may submit a maximum of three applications within a six-month period.
