Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that let large financial institutions trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Staff Data Engineer, Market Data on the Institutional Markets team, you will architect, build, and own systems that generate, capture, normalize, and distribute real-time market data across Coinbase at low latency. You will lead a lean, high-impact team and help build the ticker plant and distribution backbone of a unified trading platform.
Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”
Responsibilities
- Build and operate market data components, including feed handlers, normalization, distribution, and venue connectivity.
- Design low-latency, high-throughput systems for real-time market data used by trading systems.
- Strengthen reliability and performance through observability, on-call participation, and incident response.
- Write high-quality, well-tested code and raise the quality bar on a lean team.
- Partner with engineers, product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver market data capabilities.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience, including building and maintaining production low-latency systems.
- Hands-on experience with market data systems, such as feed handlers, normalization, or distribution.
- Proficiency in low-latency Java or C++ and high-throughput messaging technologies such as Aeron, SBE, or similar.
- Familiarity with venue and exchange connectivity and market data protocols, including FIX, ITCH/OUCH, and multicast.
- A track record of delivering features end-to-end and operating what you build.
- Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
Compensation
The annual base salary range is $207,485–$244,100 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
