Senior Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile

Coinbase is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile to join the App Infra team within the Consumer & Business group. The role will serve as a technical architect for Coinbase's native mobile future as the company replaces its React Native app with native Swift and Kotlin builds for millions of customers.

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees should expect quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges."

Responsibilities

• Define the technical strategy for Coinbase's future native app development.
• Lead the AI-assisted migration approach, designing reusable AI-automation paradigms such as agent swarms, automated dual-repository synchronization, and continuous improvement of translation efficiency through automated feedback loops.
• Architect a paved-road native framework in Swift and Kotlin that establishes architectural standards across teams and enables a single mobile contributor to work productively in both iOS and Android codebases.
• Drive organizational readiness as a trusted cross-functional partner with product, design, and engineering leadership.
• Resolve cross-team blockers, de-escalate conflict during the dual-app transition, and hold peer leaders to a high standard so effective patterns spread across teams.
• Mentor L5–L6 engineers, develop the technical leadership pipeline for native mobile, and actively recruit through professional reputation.
• Lead Coinbase's broader mobile engineering community by defining best practices and fostering connection and support among mobile engineers.

Requirements

• 12+ years of software engineering experience.
• Deep expertise in native iOS or Android mobile development using Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android, with strong working proficiency on the other platform.
• Experience operating deeply across personal and adjacent teams' codebases.
• A track record of owning outcomes across 2–3 or more teams that drove business impact, including multi-phase platform migrations or rewrites at scale.
• Experience shaping strategy and making trade-offs that improve return on investment across teams.
• Deep mobile performance expertise across iOS and Android, including cold-start optimization, frame stability, scroll-jank elimination, and device-tier profiling.
• Experience setting architectural standards and defining ownership boundaries for other teams.
• Proven ability to influence without authority at senior levels, change the technical direction of teams outside one's own, secure leadership alignment on ambiguous high-stakes decisions, and resolve cross-team blockers.
• Experience designing AI-native engineering workflows adopted across teams, including LLM-driven code generation, agent-based automation, or reusable automation patterns that re-implement existing workflows.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range, excluding equity and bonus, is $253,895–$298,700 USD. Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, along with medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
