The Applied AI team safely brings OpenAI's technology to the world. We released ChatGPT, Plugins, DALL·E, and the APIs for GPT-4, GPT-3, embeddings, and fine-tuning. We also operate inference infrastructure at scale. The team seeks to learn from deployment and distribute the benefits of AI while ensuring responsible and safe use.

Responsibilities

• Drive the design, development, and implementation of tools, systems, and processes that accelerate engineering velocity, reduce manual effort, and increase the quality of output.
• Use the latest AI tools to rethink and increase team productivity.
• Work closely with various teams within OpenAI to understand their workflows, challenges, and needs, ensuring the Engineering Acceleration team's tools and systems address those requirements.
• Partner with product engineers to lay technical foundations for new features and research capabilities.
• Guide and advise product engineering teams on best practices for ensuring observable, scalable systems.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and be responsible for the reliability of the systems built by the team.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in engineering, including 3+ years of experience building infrastructure and tooling for developers.
• Experience-driven empathy for developer tools, frustrations, and processes that create toil or burnout.
• A voracious desire to learn missing skills and an ability to share learnings clearly and concisely.
• Comfortable with ambiguity and rapidly changing conditions; able to add structure and order when needed.

Technical Context / Technologies

• The infrastructure includes large-scale GPU node deployments running in dozens of Kubernetes clusters across regions.
• Core technologies mentioned: Terraform, Buildkite, Postgres, Cosmos DB, Kafka, Python, FastAPI.
• Focus areas include developer tooling, developer productivity, observability, scalable systems, and API-driven product development.

Location & Relocation

• This role is exclusively based in OpenAI's San Francisco HQ. Secondary location(s) listed: Seattle.
