About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

Details
OpenAI is hiring software engineers to improve the productivity of networking teams that build and operate high-performance networking systems supporting training and inference infrastructure at frontier scale.
The role focuses on developer experience for engineers working on complex infrastructure systems, including build systems, test architecture, release pipelines, and reliable development workflows. The engineer will be embedded with the networking team to make it faster, safer, and easier to build, test, validate, and ship changes across multi-server, networked, and hardware-adjacent environments.
Responsibilities
- Improve development workflows for engineers building and operating networking systems.
- Design and improve continuous deployment, release, and validation pipelines.
- Build and maintain test harnesses for multi-server, networked, and hardware-backed environments.
- Improve iteration speed across C++, Python, and build-system-heavy codebases.
- Partner with engineers to identify friction in CI, testing, debugging, and deployment workflows.
- Drive testing and reliability strategy for infrastructure components supporting large-scale training and inference workloads.
- Work closely with centralized developer experience teams while remaining embedded with networking engineers.
Requirements
- Motivation to help other engineers move faster and with greater confidence.
- Experience with CI/CD, release pipelines, testing infrastructure, or build systems.
- Comfort working with C++, Python, and build systems such as CMake, Bazel, or Blaze.
- Experience building test harnesses, automation, and workflow improvements for complex systems.
- Willingness to learn the networking domain sufficiently to improve team effectiveness.
- A problem-solving approach focused on addressing underlying causes of slow builds, flaky tests, brittle release processes, painful debugging, and unclear validation.
- Pragmatism and the ability to balance high standards with forward progress.
- Ability to work end-to-end across engineers, workflows, codebases, and operational realities.
- Self-direction and comfort operating with ambiguity in a high-context infrastructure environment.
