Staff+ Software Engineer, Developer Productivity

Anthropic's Infrastructure organization builds systems that support reliable AI development, safety experiments, and scaling Claude to millions of users. The Developer Productivity team owns the end-to-end experience of how engineers and researchers develop, build, test, and ship code at scale, including source control and language ecosystems, monorepo build and CI infrastructure, and developer acceleration tooling integrated with Claude.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and roadmap for the area, translating team-level goals into concrete execution plans.
• Define infrastructure architecture and ensure the hardest problems are solved, either directly or by working through others.
• Design and build scalable, reliable distributed infrastructure and shared libraries supporting high-volume workloads across engineering teams.
• Own and evolve build environments, package management, and dependency systems to enable fast, reproducible builds.
• Define and implement language ecosystem standards, tooling, and frameworks that improve developer productivity across research and production workloads.

Requirements

• Deep experience with build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and/or developer tooling in a large monorepo environment.
• Strong proficiency in Python, Rust, and/or Go.
• Passion for developer productivity and reducing friction in the software development lifecycle.
• Experience with container orchestration and infrastructure at scale.
• Excellent communication skills and an ability to support internal partners in improving their development experience.
• Ability to design foundational systems and work independently on ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges.
• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a field relevant to the role.

Strong Candidate Qualifications

• 15+ years of experience in a full-time Software Engineer role, excluding internships and co-ops, building and operating large-scale developer infrastructure.
• 3+ years of experience leading large-scale complex projects or teams as a technical lead.
• Experience with CI orchestration tools such as Buildkite, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar, and merge queue management at scale.
• Experience building or operating remote build execution systems such as the Bazel Remote Execution API, BuildBarn, BuildBuddy, or similar.
• Experience with Nix, NixOS, Docker, and managing large image or package sets at scale.
• Experience building CLI tools, developer-facing services, and GitHub API and automation workflows.

Compensation

The annual salary range is $405,000–$625,000 USD. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Work Arrangement and Logistics

This role follows a location-based hybrid policy. Staff are currently expected to work from one of Anthropic's offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time. Anthropic sponsors visas, although sponsorship is evaluated based on the role and candidate.
